The Name William Herbert Mortensen 1897 - 1965 cannot be forgotten because his name will go down in history as the Michelangelo of Photography.

The year was 1921 when Mortensen arrived in Hollywood where he got a job with Cecil B. DeMille and worked on every production for the next six years. During this time he photographed all of the Hollywood stars including Rudolph Valentino, Norma Shearer, Norma Talmage, Lon Chaney, Clara Bow and Jean Harlow.

In 1931 he left Hollywood and moved to Laguna Beach to open the Mortensen School of Photography and over the next 30 years he brought individual instruction to some 3000 students. Between 1933 and 1955 he produced (with the collaboration with George Dunham ) over a hundred articles on photography for most of the important photographic publications on subjects relating to his methods. During this time Mortensen and Dunham also wrote nine books . They are all out of print but are valued highly by those fortunate enough to have any of them.

Mortensen worked with Bromoil, Carbon Printing, Paper Negatives and he is the one that invented the Texture Screen and worked with the process called Abrasion Tone. He developed Metalchrome -- a process to make color prints by chemical reaction on a black and white print.

During Mortensens life there was never a book that contained any of his color prints. After his death Jaques de Langre with the help of some of Mortensens former students published a new Monsters and Madonnas book with 8 full color pages. It is a beautiful 11 x 14 hard cover volume suitable for coffee table viewing.

All of the Mortensen books have been out of print for a number of years. Collectors have paid in excess of three hundred dollars for an original Mortensen Monsters and Madonnas. We are fortunate to have found a few copies of the De Langre Monsters and Madonnas in like new condition. We offer them for sale for $175.00 each. Shipping in the United States is free and add $25.00 for foreign delivery.
